The questions appearing on the Mandelbrot Competition tests provided here were drawn from the 1996-97 contests. We invite you to print these tests and solutions and try them out for yourself to obtain a sense of the relative difficulty of the two levels. Also, an additional Mandelbrot Competition test with answers is available below for downloading.

The Mandelbrot Competition

Questions typically cover geometry, algebra, probability, number theory, and other non-Calculus topics. For a more complete outline download the individual test topics list from the Forms page, or to order more practice tests visit the Resources page. Questions are presented in increasing order of difficulty and are valued at one, two, or three points accordingly. Have fun with the tests!

The Mandelbrot Team Play

Traditionally one test each year is devoted to Euclidian geometry. Other topics can run the gamut from unexpected properties of Pythagorean triples to a nice result on how to obtain all possible batting averages. The sample Team Play test below investigates a deceptively simple sequence of positive odd integers.

We always love to hear of clever alternate solutions or extensions, as well as original problems of your own. Tell us about them from the Dialogue page.

Extra Mandelbrot Competition test

One of the 1998-99 Individual Test has been released as an additional sample Mandelbrot Competition test. It is somewhat easier than the national level tests and a bit harder than the regional level tests. Answers are printed upside-down at the bottom of the test. Click here to download the sample test. If you desire detailed solutions, you may order The Mandelbrot Problem Book from the Resources page. For assistance viewing and printing the test, visit the Download Help Center.
